NCR's 3Q earnings soar

October 27, 2005

DAYTON, Ohio - While Diebold Inc. reported a drop in third-quarter profit from 2004, ATM rival NCR Corp. reported profit growth from the previous year. (Read also Diebld's profit falls 45% in 3Q.)

The Dayton-based manufacturer pulled net income of $222 million, or $1.18 per share, an 80 percent increase over last year. The leap from $44 million in 2004 was related to $137 million from the favorable settlement of prior-year tax audits, a news release noted.

Revenue from the Teradata Data Warehousing and Financial Self Service (ATM) segments carried NCR during the quarter, with posted revenue increases of 16 percent and 3 percent respectively. Revenue from the Retail Store Automation and Customer Services segments fell 4 percent.

"Key drivers of our performance included higher-than-expected revenue growth and profitability in our Teradata Data Warehousing business, substantial profit improvement from the second quarter in our Financial Self Service business, continued margin improvement in our Customer Services business, and ongoing success in delivering on our multiyear profit improvement plan," said Bill Nuti, NCR's chief executive officer.

The company's revenue for 3Q '05 was $1.5 million, up 3 percent from $1.45 million in 3Q '04. And revenue for the year is $4.3 million, up slightly from $4.2 million last year.
