NCR hangs on to world ATM lead

DAYTON, Ohio -- NCRhung onto its status as the world's leading ATM manufacturer in 2000, shipping 50,322 units according to the Nilson Report, an Oxnard, Calif.-based trade publication. That number represented a 14 percent increase over NCR's shipments for 1999.

NCR was the market leader in Europe, the Middle East, Australia/New Zealand, Africa, and was number one in the Asian market if Japan is not included.

North Canton, Ohio-based Diebold and Paderborn, Germany-based Wincor Nixdorf came in at numbers two and three, respectively, in Nilson's survey. Diebold shipped 48,865 units, a 37 percent jump from 1999. Wincor-Nixdorf shipped 17,345 units, a 5 percent increase from 1999.

Diebold was number one in the U.S., Canada, South America and Central America.

Long Beach Miss.-based Triton moved up to number four in the world by posting a 17 percent increase in shipments, to 13,557. Triton's strongest markets were the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Rounding out the top five in the world was Houston-based Tidel, with 13,523 units, a 61 percent jump from 1999. Nearly all of Tidel's units, 12,723, were sold in the U.S.

The rest of the top 10 in the world, according to Nilson: Fujitsu at number six with 13,381 units, a 14 percent drop from 1999; Hyosung at number seven with 11,811 units, an increase of 52 percent; Omronat number eight with 8,515 units, an increase of 34 percent; Oki Electric at number nine with 5,155 units, a decrease of 13 percent; and LG Electronics with 4,100 units, a jump of 117 percent.

Overall, shipments of new machines grew 14.3 percent to 207,357 units, Nilson reported. The U.S. led the way with 60,383 units, up 21.4 percent. Next in line were Europe with 55,611 units, up 8 percent, and Asia-Pacific including Japan with 49,015 units, up 18.7 percent.
