EMV progress
Global payment networks have reported that 55 percent of spend is now on chip cards and 96 percent of the top 200 merchants now accept chip payments.
The ATM Industry Association estimates that 80 percent of ATMs will be chip enabled by the end of 2017.
According to various reports, 70 to 80 percent of small and medium-size businesses are now chip enabled.
Upcoming milestones
Visa and American Express chargeback relief policies will expire in April, at which time merchants will be once again be held liable for chargeback amounts of less than $25, the release said.
Card issuers approaching their first chip card reissuance cycle should consider issues such as product choices, product lifecycle management, dual-interface cards, certification, instant issuance impact and Faster EMV, the forum advised.
Future priorities
The forum is prioritizing mobile and contactless payment implementation guidance for issuers and merchants. Forum director Randy Vanderhoof said he's seen indications that the U.S. market is getting primed for contactless payments.
The forum also will focus attention on secure online payments with implementation guidance for 3DS 2.0 and other upcoming specifications.
