Superior Court Judge Matt Osman sentenced Bricard Washington, 30, to 24 years in prison over the murder of Katie Eckard in 2020. Washington and a juvenile approached Eckard and her friends after they withdrew money from an ATM in Charlotte, North Carolina, and demanded money from them at gunpoint, according to a report by Queen City News.

After Eckard and her friends said they didn't have any money, the juvenile fired into the backseat, striking Eckard. She would later die at the hospital from her injuries. The suspects fled back to a vehicle that was driven by Marquez Williamson.

The juvenile died before his case was disposed. Washington pled guilty to second-degree murder.
