April 23, 2019

The Finance Ministry of Japan has announced that, starting in 2024, it will issue new bank notes for the first time since 2004, according to a report by Coin World.

A 1,000 yen will be the first release. New 5,000 yen and 10,000 yen notes will follow. An exact timetable has not been announced for their issue.

The ministry said that the 2,000 yen note, which is little used, will not be reissued.

The planned 2024 issues be somewhat similar in style to current notes, but will feature new themes on front and back and strong new security features, the report said.

The 1,000 yen note will depict renowned bacteriologist Shibasaburo Kitasato. The back will feature "Wave off Kanagawa" a famous block print by Katsushika Hokusai.

The 5,000-yen note will depict Umeko Tsuda, a 19th century pioneer in women's education. The back will feature wisteria flowers.

The 10,000-yen note will depict Eiichi Shibusawa, known as “the father of Japanese capitalism.” The back will feature the Marunouchi Building, a Tokyo skyscraper.
