Isis will rebrand mobile wallet to disassociate itself from terrorist group

July 7, 2014

Mobile wallet provider Isis today announced it will rebrand its product to avoid any kind of mistaken association with the extremist militant group ISIS, or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

Isis said in an email to news outlets that it has been closely monitoring the militant group's actions in Iraq. "After careful consideration, we are taking steps to rebrand and expect to introduce the new brand in the coming months," Isis said in the email.

CEO Michael Abbott made the announcement via the company's blog.

"We have no interest in sharing a name with a group whose name has become synonymous with violence and our hearts go out to those who are suffering," Abbott wrote. "Changing a brand is never easy, but we know this is the right decision — for our company, our partners and our customers."

Isis is a joint venture between AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless. It announced in May that wallet activations were up to 20,000 per day
