India's UBI rolls out ATMs for disabled customers

June 8, 2012

Union Bank of India, one of India's pioneer public sector banks, today launched the country's "first true Accessible ATM" at The Blind People Association, in Ahmedabad.

NCR developed the customized ATMs, according to a story at Finextra. Keeping in mind local needs, the company manufactured specialized machines and software to ensure that a disabled person can operate the machine in a way that maintains the security and safety of the transaction.

The "Voice Guidance Solution" ATM includes an ASA-approved keypad with Braille stickers, audio, voice-guidance and provision of wheelchair ramps, catering to the needs of the visually impaired and other disabled persons. The ATM provides head phones and an option to blank out the screen as a safety measure.

"We congratulate the Union Bank of India for its latest milestone and taking a big step to ensure ATM access to the disabled," said Nagesh Nayak, professional services practice manager at NCR. "As more talking ATMs are deployed; access to self-service technology is ensured, which is making the lives of persons with disabilities more convenient. As a concerned corporate citizen, NCR has been developing specialized machines for India."
