Indian engineering students develop ATM security tool

May 23, 2014

Four students of electronics and communication engineering at India’s MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology have created an ATM security system that can detect the masked face of an ATM bandit.

The invention uses automated real-time and vision-based technology, said a report by The Times of India.

Project guide Nuthan Prasad said the device uses cameras to capture an image of the attacker’s eyes. With this information, the device maps out the geometrical proportions of the individual’s face, providing an aid to identification.

"We focused on developing a security system with video surveillance feeding two cameras,” said Ajaya HS, an engineering student who worked on the project. “It can be used at railway stations, airports or any other public place."

According The Times, the team might ask the government to take a look at the system to make ATMs safer. The report did not say whether a would-be robber could foil the system by wearing sunglasses.
