Indian bank installs ATM at 13,200 feet

December 11, 2003

GANGTOK, India - UTI Bank on Dec. 12 installed what is billed as the world's highest ATM, situated at Thegu in East Sikkim at an altitude of 13,200 feet.

The NCRATM was designed to function smoothly in extreme cold conditions, said R K Niyogi, UTI's senior vice-president, in a report that appeared on Mid-Day.com.

Noyogi said people in the higher reaches of the Himalayan state will benefit immensely from the machine."People in the higher reaches of the mountains now have a bank ATM in their midst capable of serving far-flung areas like Tamze, Thegu, Chhangu, Sherathang, Kupup and Gnathang."

The bank worked closely with the Army's 17 Mountain Division to install the ATM.

Since Thegu does not have power connectivity, UTI Bank has made arrangements to run the ATM outlet with its own captive power, according to the report.
