Huawei Philippines seeks central bank's OK on virtual teller machines

Given approval by Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the company says it will pursue installation of its VTMs on a commercial scale.

September 8, 2014

Chinese tech giant Huawei is looking to expand its virtual teller machine footprint into the Philippines, according to a report by GMA Online.

The company's Huawei Technologies Philippines Inc. division reportedly is seeking permission from the country's central bank, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, to introduce its VTM into the Philippines financial service sector's ATM mix.

Huawei Business Development Manager Dennis Benipayo has said that the company is prepared to launch VTMs on a commercial scale, but first must secure "guidance" from the central bank saying that the VTM is an acceptable iteration of the ATM.

According to the report, Benipayo said Huawei was "trying to talk to BSP," but the bank said in an email that it had not received a formal inquiry from Huawei.
