Hackers' conference proves fertile ground for ATM skimming
August 2, 2009
The DefCon hacker conference in Las Vegas proved a fertile ground for suspicious activity. According to a wrap-up story from Wired.com, an ATM at the Riviera Hotel and Center conference center, where the event was held, got hacked with malicious software and collected ATM/debit details from an unknown number of hackers who attended the show. The ATM was later seized by security authorities, but investigators don't know how long the ATM was in the hotel or whether it was placed there by a DefCon attendee.
Brian Markus, of Aries Security, who removed the ATM, told Wired.com the ATM was strategically placed to avoid surveillance, obviously the work of a true professional:
 | In any casino anything that is considered that high value has a camera, and they placed it where there were no (hotel) cameras visibly watching that exact spot where the ATM was. | |
The ATM had been placed right outside the hotel's security office, according to the Wired.com article.
