Ghana ATMs to get eye ID

July 8, 2013

International Computer Systems and IBM have reportedly teamed with Sunnet Systems to develop iris recognition technology that might soon be introduced in the Ghanaian banking industry. The system would allow customers to get cash from a branch or ATM without the need for any other form of ID.

In an All Africa article, Ghassan Sarsak, a senior manager at ICS in charge of research and development, said that while it is possible for one person to use the ATM card of another to illegally withdraw money, it would be impossible with iris recognition.

"[T]here is no way two persons can have one eye and, as such, no one other than the owner of an account can withdraw money from one's account." Sarsak also said that iris recognition was already being used in Arab countries to identify "high profile" customers.
