German bank adds protection against ATM malware upload

Newly integrated software allows only authorized code to run on the ATM network, so ING-DiBa can prevent attacks, rather than simply responding to them.

August 18, 2014

ING-DiBa, Germany's third largest private consumer bank with more than eight million customers, has installed the NCR Solidcore Suite for APTRA security software on its 1,300 ATMs, according to a company press release.

NCR Solidcore Suite for APTRA proactively allows only authorized code to run, rather than reacting to known attacks as they arise. Specifically, Solidcore Suite for APTRA automatically creates and updates the inventory of authorized code and protects the system's memory so that this code cannot be modified, deleted or hijacked — the process in which malicious code replaces authorized code with itself.

"NCR Solidcore for APTRA delivers standardized and comprehensive protection for our entire self-service environment," said Jörg Johannsen, team leader for cash handling at ING-DiBa. "The software was easy to integrate into our system architecture and operating schedule, and it is scalable and available for all of our multivendor self-service systems."

"Solidcore for APTRA is one of the most comprehensive security solutions available in the banking market," said Harald Heinz, area sales leader for finance at NCR Corp. with responsibility for the DACH region. "It enables our clients to plan and implement forward-thinking strategies whilst ensuring high safety levels for the consumer."
