Genpass hires exec to lead Card Services

March 18, 2003

IRVING, Texas -- Genpass, Inc., has hired John M. Gallagher as senior vice president of its Card Services division.

Gallagher comes to Genpass from payment terminal manufacturer VeriFone, where he was a director of product marketing with international responsibility for large retail accounts. He has 30 years experience in the EFT industry, specializing in sales and product development for the supermarket industry.

At Genpass, he will assume responsibility for payroll card sales to large companies and supermarket chains.

Like many Genpass executives, Gallagher previously worked with Bipin Shah, Genpass' chief executive. He was in charge of supermarket sales and product development for Shah at point-of-sale processor Gensar Technologies, now Paymentech. Prior to Gensar, Gallagher worked with Shah at CoreStates Financial Corporation, where he was in charge of POS product development for the MAC and BuyPass Networks.

According to a news release, Gallagher was instrumental in convincing a supermarket chain in Pennsylvania to accept the MAC card at its check-out lanes as part of a pilot program. Six weeks later, the chain expanded the program to include acceptance at all its stores, signaling the beginning of debit card acceptance at supermarkets.

Gallagher joins a list of previous hires by Shah, including Douglas Anderson, former EPS/MAC CEO; Gary Staub, former head of Mellon Network Services' merchant business; Thomas McHugh, former technology chief of Star/MAC; and most recently William Raymond, senior manager for Bank of America's ATM network.
