Gang tunnels six months to steal ATM

January 15, 2012

Call it a case of dubious return on investment. UPI reported yesterday that police in Levenshulme, England, discovered on January 4 that thieves had spent six months digging a 100-foot tunnel into a Blockbuster store to steal an ATM containing about $9,000 in cash.

After digging the tunnel, the crooks had to cut through more than 15 inches of concrete to get to the ATM, which held only about a third of its usual cash because of the recent holidays.

The recent theft is believed to have been committed by the same thieves responsible for a similar attempt to steal the Blockbuster ATM in 2007. "We all remember the attempt to steal the machine four years ago, but it seems the people responsible for that raid simply refused to give up," a Blockbuster employee said. Police have yet to make any arrests in the case.
