Free guide offers EMV troubleshooting tips for ATM operators

December 21, 2017

The U.S. Payments Forum has released a white paper to help ATM owners avoid and troubleshoot common problems related to EMV transactions.

EMV Troubleshooting Guide for ATM Owners and Operators was developed by the forum's ATM working committee and is available now for free download at the forum website.

"The ATM Industry Association estimates that 80 percent of ATMs will be chip-enabled by the end of 2017," U.S. Payments Forum Director Randy Vanderhoof said in a press release. "With the increase in enablement, the ATM industry needs a go-to resource for troubleshooting common problems relating to transactions using chip cards at both chip-enabled and non chip-enabled terminals. With this document, the industry now has an easy-to-use resource to answer many of the common questions owners and operators have today."

The white paper covers:

  • Best practices for ensuring data integrity and monitoring transaction activity in order to prevent common transaction problems at chip-enabled and nonchip ATMs.
  • Tips on monitoring for problem scenarios and determining the scope of an issue. The paper describes several potential scenarios, including fallback and declined transactions, and chip transaction reversals.

The white paper is part of the forum's ongoing effort to identify issues and provide guidance and best practices to keep the U.S. chip migration moving forward, the release said.

With its next project, the ATM working committee will outline guidelines for accepting contactless transactions at the ATM, and for interoperability between mobile wallet and contactless EMV card technologies.
