First Data company signs card-processing agreement in Poland

June 14, 2010

Polcard, a First Data Corp. business based in Poland, announced Monday that it has signed a long-term card-processing agreement with Media Markt, a leading consumer-electronics retailer with stores throughout the country. Polcard has installed 300 payment terminals in 41 Media Markt retail locations in Poland.

Polcard deployed 252 fixed and 48 wireless payment terminals, enabling Media Markt to accept card payments at a greater range of locations. First Data also equipped the machines with Dynamic Currency Conversion functionality, enabling cardholders to pay for their goods and services in their card issuers' currency. Cardholders also can use the terminals to top-up their mobile phones.

"We are delighted Media Markt has entrusted First Data with its card processing," Janusz Diemko, managing director of First Data Poland, said in a statement. "Servicing a company with the size and requirements of Media Markt demands a capable efficient infrastructure and technology solution, and we are pleased to meet expectations of this major retailer. First Data did not release contract details.

Media Markt, founded in 1979, is Europe's largest electronics retailer with 580 stores in 14 countries. It is part of Metro Group AG, a German retail group, which also owns Media Saturn Holding Polska Sp. z.o.o

The terminals will deliver high quality, reliable service and customer-focused functionality, Robert Jakoniuk, a Media Saturn Holding Polska board member, said in a statement.
In addition to card processing, Atlanta-based First Data is a large owner of ATMs deployed throughout Europe.
