In what appeared to be part of a larger drug and money-laundering investigation, U.S. Treasury agents and local law enforcement officers in Alton, Illinois, confiscated an ATM from a c-store on Tuesday.
According to a report by a local newspaper, police officers closed the Cowboy Market for an hour while a locksmith disconnected the ATM, which Treasury officials then hauled away.
Police in Alton, which lies in the greater St. Louis area on the Illinois side of the state line, declined to explain why the ATM was removed, saying that it was a federal case.
St. Louis media reported that federal agents carried out other raids in the area, as well. According to the report, "agents confiscated cigarettes being sold illegally; substances containing K2 artificial marijuana; ATMs and computers as they executed 23 search warrants for a New York state case."
