FCU plans to bypass ATM cards with help from facial recognition tech

Baltimore, Maryland-based Securityplus Federal Credit Union will introduce a new biometric ATM this month that lets members authenticate themselves via facial recognition.

Acording to Credit Union Journal, the FCU has used fingerprint technology for employee security for more than a decade; now that the price of facial recognition programs has come down, the FI is ready to begin experimenting with those, as well.

To log on at the facial recognition kiosks, the member enters an identification number. The kiosk then takes a picture of that individual's face and places it on file.

When the member returns to make another transaction, the physical and digital images are compared by the ATM and, assuming that they match, banking access is granted, Securityplus FCU senior systems engineer Mike Adams told the Journal.

Securityplus intends to roll out the kiosks at all of its seven branch locations eventually, the article said.
