The European ATM Security Team says it has received its first report from a member nation of a successful stereo-skimming attack.
November 30, 2015
The European ATM Security Team has published its third European Fraud Update for 2015. The report includes crime statistics for 17 countries in the Single Euro Payments Area and for three non-SEPA countries.
Seventeen of 20 reporting countries reported card skimming at ATMs. EAST received its first report of a successful stereo-skimming attack, as well as a report from another country of a failed ATM shimming attempt.
EAST nations continued to report ATM skimming-related losses occurring outside of EMV chip liability shift areas — 10 SEPA and 53 non-SEPA countries reported such losses. The top three locations for this fraud were the U.S., Indonesia and the Philippines.
Skimming attacks on other terminal types were reported by nine countries; one country reported attacks at bicycle rental payment terminals.
Eleven countries reported cash-trapping attacks; six countries reported card-trapping incidents.
Two countries reported ATM malware and logical security attacks: One involved malware-enabled cash-out; the other was a black-box attack.
Seven countries reported ram raids and ATM burglary, and seven countries reported explosive gas attacks. In one country, the average duration of an ATM explosive gas attack was reported to be three to five minutes.
EAST members and associates can get the full update at the organization's website.
