Diebold, EyeLock to showcase screen-free ATM at CES
Diebold Inc. and EyeLock, a provider of iris-based identity authentication solutions, will present "Irving," a screenless, self-service ATM at this week's 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the companies said in a press release.
The concept ATM has no PIN pad, card reader or screen. Instead, the machine works with a mobile app on the user's smartphone to stage transactions, which are carried out via NFC and QR code technology — with ID verification conducted via EyeLock iris scanning.
"EyeLock believes that the age of carrying plastic cards and remembering passwords is just about over and the era of unfettered personal access through biometric technology is just beginning," said Anthony Antolino, chief marketing and business development officer at EyeLock LLC. "For banking and other applications, EyeLock's iris identity authentication solutions are not only highly secure, but [also] very easy to use."
To take advantage of the technology, Irving ATM users simply open the app on their phone or tablet, designate the amount to be withdrawn, and then proceed to any EyeLock-equipped ATM on the network to complete the transaction. The machine quickly scans the user's iris to ascertain identity, verifie the transaction via QR code, and then dispenses the desired sum. The whole process takes less than half the time of a typical ATM transaction today, the release said.
"While digital channels are evolving, cash will continue to play an important role in consumer transactions," Frank Natoli, EVP of self-service technology at Diebold, said in the release. "That's where Diebold comes into play — to bridge the digital and physical worlds of cash in unprecedented ways through cardless transactions, mobile integration and faster, more convenient access."
The ATM concept and is being tested at the Citibank Innovation Lab in New York, the release said. As yet, no date has been set for in-market testing or deployment.
The Irving prototype will be on display in the VOXX International booth at CES. VOXX acquired a majority interest in EyeLock in September 2015.
