Diebold rolls out anti-skimming devices

June 2, 2010

Diebold Inc. has rolled out a suite of anti-skimming solutions designed to help banks and other financial institutions mitigate card skimming against their ATMs.

Diebold's card-skimming technology includes ATM card-reader security designed to deter skimmer attachment, an alert system that warns bank personnel thieves have attached a skimming device to an ATM and an electromagnetic field that interferes with a skimmer's ability to capture a card's magnetic-stripe data.

Diebold's monitoring center also issues real-time e-mail alerts and text messages warning bank employees of skimming attacks. Thieves steal cardholder information by placing a device over the ATM card slot. The phony device reads data on a card's magnetic strip, enabling thieves to produce counterfeit cards.

"Skimming is a real issue for banks," Gil Luria, an analyst with Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles, tells ATMMarketplace. "NCR [Corp.] and Wincor [Nixdorf AG] both have anti-skimming devices, but Diebold has been the most vocal about fighting skimming."

Diebold, the world's third-largest ATM manufacturer based on annual shipments, has its headquarters in North Canton, Ohio.
