Diebold, QI sign SmartKit agreement

March 21, 2002

Diebold has signed an agreement that could lead to the assimilation of QI's SmartKit cash card reader into Diebold's systems to allow for open card payments.

The 10-year non-disclosure agreement gives Diebold exclusive rights to buy products from Vancouver based QI that would utilize Diebold's protocol information, which would be turned over to QI.

In a press statement, QI cited its confidence that its SmartKit cash card reader can be configured to work with Diebold systems, which can be upgraded to enhance card based transaction services.

QI Technologies produces readers for smart card payments, particularly for open cash card payments in unattended POS applications. SmartKit's modular design can support up to eight schemes at a time and accepts current and planned electronic purse schemes by international banks.

Smartkit cash card readers are being used in vending machines, public washing machines, photocopiers, and rapid transit ticketing systems in Canada, the U.S. and England. The kits are currently being introduced in Hong Kong.
