Diebold, NCR stocks outgain Apple, Microsoft

February 27, 2012

In recent weeks, year-to-date gains for shares of NCR Corp. and Diebold have smoked both Apple and Microsoft, said a report at Forbes.com.

NCR recently reported strong sales and underlying profit gains in the fourth quarter of 2011 along with a growing backlog of business. In addition to a rise in ATM and related services sales, overall results were helped by devices such as POS scanners and the service contracts that went with them.

Diebold also reported Q4 growth in profits and revenues, but was hampered by a security division whose growth largely depends on installing cameras in new bank branches. The banks closed branches instead. Still, the company gained major contracts by offering security services along with its ATMs.

A key difference between the companies lies in their reliance on financial institutions for business. NCR spent $1.2 billion last year to ensure a non-banking revenue stream. It purchased Radiant Systems and built a new business division focusing on machines and service for airlines, rental car agencies, hotels and other hospitality and retail companies. On the other hand, nearly all Diebold business is tied to financial institutions.
