Diebold intros Opteva, its 1st new line of ATMs in 15 years

March 11, 2003

NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- Diebold, Incorporated (NYSE: DBD) has introduced its first new ATMs in 15 years, a product line called Opteva.

According to a news release, the line-up includes the four core units installed most often by deployers around the world: a through-the-wall advanced function walk-up ATM (Opteva 760); a lobby advanced function ATM (Opteva 720); a through-the-wall walk-up cash dispenser (Opteva 560); and a lobby cash dispenser (Opteva 520).

The ATMs feature Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports which allow peripheral hardware such as card readers to be easily incorporated into the machines. The ports also facilitate faster transactions through high-speed communications with ATM peripherals, according to the release.

Another key differentiator is the option of a dispenser with a five-cassette capacity rather than the four cassettes found on many bank ATMs. The fifth cassette can dispense stamps, coupons, tickets or other media for incremental revenue while maintaining the cash capacity that previous ATMs offered, according to the release.

Opteva also offers a two-color capable graphical receipt printer, which can be used to provide items such as full-sized statements, loan applications and other revenue-generating opportunities.

Opteva ATMs are designed to meet all known international accessibility standards, and they are the only ATMs in the industry that support both text-to-speech and .wav files for audio capability, according to the release.

The machines feature a standard 15.1-inch flat panel LCD screen. Sunlight-viewable and touch-screen options are available across the entire product line. Another enhancement to the user interface is Opteva's tri-color, programmable lead-through indicator lights.

Opteva's bulk-note acceptor allows consumers to deposit cash without an envelope and credit up to 100 notes at a time, which Diebold said is the most in the industry. In addition, Diebold's Intelligent Depository Module accepts a check deposit without the use of an envelope.

Security features include: consumer awareness mirrors, various lighting options, a recessed keypad and display area that reduces opportunities for PIN surfing, and privacy display filters to prevent shoulder surfing.

The Opteva line also features a fraud resistant dispenser and card reader, as well as a Triple DES-compliant encrypted PIN pad, according to the release.

Opteva ATMs have a rear operator monitor with video and touch-screen capabilities, a full keyboard and software that provides an easy-to-use maintenance interface. Through the use of Diebold's Agilis software, the ATMs can offer video-based operator instructions with step-by-step directions for many maintenance procedures, including cash replenishment and balancing.

According to the release, Diebold conducted primary research in 18 countries while developing Opteva.

Walden O'Dell, Diebold's chairman, president and chief executive, said in the release, "The increased functionality of the Opteva family not only helps increase ATM revenue opportunities, but also makes the ATM a viable alternative to building and staffing a new branch."
