A Colombian gang was busted in the Malaysian town of Kajang when police caught them in the act of stealing an ATM, said a news story at the Malaysia Star online.
Policemen spotted gang members trying to load an ATM containing some RM200,000 ($66,258) into a car. A scuffle ensued before the police managed to arrest one of the suspects. Three other gang members escaped in another car.
Police believe the gang was responsible for similar thefts in the area using the same modus operandi. Their initial investigations showed that the group would rent cars before surveying strategic locations, then disable the ATM’s alarm system before using cables hooked to the car to remove the ATM.
Checks revealed that the suspect arrested had entered the country illegally. Police were in the midst of tracking down the remaining gang members with the assistance of the immigration department.
