December 26, 2006
Digital Transactions:The latest U.S. trial of contactless payments that use mobile phones and near-field communication technology is expected to begin Jan. 10 in New York City. The trial, conducted by Citigroup Inc.'s Citibank unit, represents the first in which users can access credit cards issued by a major bank in an open, urban environment. Citi, which is sponsoring the New York pilot along with MasterCard PayPass, Nokia, and Cingular Wireless, has set up a Web site where holders of its credit cards can sign up for the three-to-six-month test.
