CIT strike could mean empty ATMs over Canada's Victoria Day holiday

GardaWorld workers in Ottawa, Canada, say they will strike today if the company does not drop its demand for employee benefits concessions.

May 14, 2015

Earlier this week, 140 armored car workers for GardaWorld in Ottawa, Canada, issued a strike notice threatening to walk off the job today at 3:45 p.m. unless the company returns to the bargaining table with an improved offer.

If a strike is enacted, it is likely that ATMs across the Ottawa region will go unstocked over the long weekend in observance of Canada's Victoria Day holiday on Monday, May 18.

According to a report by the Ottawa Sun, ATMs operated in Ottawa by TD, Scotiabank, National Bank, RBC and BMO would be worst affected by a strike.

GardaWorld employees belonging to Unifor Local 4266 rejected an offer that a Unifor press release said would have undermined their job and retirement security.

According to the Unifor Local 4266 website, "the employer is threatening to close the Ottawa branch and move the work to the Gatineau [Quebec] branch, unless the members concede to the unrealistic concessions."

Garda declined comment in the Sun report.
