A woman in eastern China has been hailed as a hero for standing up to a thief at an ATM, according to a news report in the Telegraph.
A man in his 20s identified as Du approached the 57-year-old woman, identified as Zhang, with a knife as she withdrew money in Haimen, Jiangsu province. CCTV footaged showed that instead of handing over the cash, Zhang talked to Du calmly, then reprimanded him.
"I said 'young man, you're so young, why are you doing this kind of thing? You think it's a good idea? There are security cameras in here, you're being monitored'," Zhang told Chinese media.
Zhang offered Du some money, which he declined before fleeing the scene. "I thought he was so young, and not a really bad person, but perhaps in that moment he was confused and wanted to rob me," Zhang said.
Du was later arrested by the police and told reporters, "I feel sorry I let down my Mum and Dad, and I want to say sorry to that woman too."
