CDS certifies device for wireless ATMs

June 27, 2004

NEW ORLEANS - Transaction processor Columbus Data Services (CDS) has certified the Gateway 420 device from JBM Electronics that converts asynchronous dial-up ATMs to CDMA (Code-Division Multiple Access), a form of wireless telecommunications.

According to a news release, the device allows any ATM that supports the Visa II dial-up messaging format to process transactions via CDMA.

The technology will allow mobile, event-based ATMs to run without having to install a phone line at every location. CDMA can also be used at locations where phone lines are expensive to install and maintain or where a higher transaction speed is important.

John Willmon, vice president of Business Development for CDS, said, "CDMA technology will be the biggest thing in the ATM processing industry since dial-up ATMs became a standard. The cost of the technology makes it even better than conventional phone lines. Transaction speeds will be greatly increased, while costs will be reduced."

According to the release, the device sells for approximately $800 with a wireless card. The cost of service for an ATM doing fewer than 2,000 transactions a month is less than conventional dial-up monthly phone line charges. Rental programs are also available.

The device is currently being installed in beta test locations and will be available the first week of July.

Willmon said that CDMA will replace CDPD, which is being phased out by wireless carriers like Verizon and AT&T. CDMA will be available in many markets where CDPD was not, he said.
