The state-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia will spend 100m Br ($5.7 million) to buy 420 ATMs and 600,000 electronic payment cards, said a news report at AddisFortune.com. The purchase represents Ethopia’s largest-ever procurement of ATMs and EMV cards.
Industry observers have interpreted the move as a drive by CBE to claim the lead on the IT front, where it has previously lagged behind other financial providers.
Tender was opened to suppliers on Feb. 9. Suppliers proposing to sell ATMs manufactured in the United States, India and China were observed during the opening of technical offers. ATM manufacturers represented included Diebold, Wincor Nixdorf, GRG Banking and NCR.
