Police in Yorkshire, England, are warning residents of a rise in cash traps on ATMs. In these incidents, a criminal places a cash trap on an ATM that traps cash as it is dispensed, according to a report by the BBC.
The victim believes the ATM isn't working, but in reality the cash is inside the cash trap, which the thieves later return to retrieve. Currently, three men have been arrested in Yorkshire for allegedly placing these devices.
"Before making a withdrawal, people should check the machine for any unusual attachments, loose fittings or signs that it may have been tampered with," Detective Sergeant Sam Harding of Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organized Crime Unit, said in the report. "If cash does not dispense but your account is debited, report the matter to your bank immediately and contact Report Fraud or your local police force."
