Cardtronics expands relationships with Walgreens, Citi

January 23, 2017

Walgreens and Cardtronics have extended and expanded their long-term ATM services agreement, according to a press release from the independent ATM deployer.

Cardtronics is the largest single provider of ATM services to the Walgreens family of drugstores, which includes Duane Reade pharmacies.

The release also announced Cardtronics and Citi have signed a branding agreement covering ATMs in 1,000 Walgreens and Duane Reade drugstores in key markets, including the New York City and Chicago metropolitan areas.

Branding of the machines is underway and expected to be complete this spring, the release said.

The relationship between Cardtronics and Walgreens was established in 2004. Since that time, Cardtronics' presence in Walgreens and Duane Reade drugstores has grown from fewer than 400 ATMs to approximately 6,700.

"ATM service is an important convenience for our customers," Walgreen's Group VP and General Merchandise Manager Moe Alkemade said in the release. "We are pleased these agreements mean that millions of payment card users will have surcharge-free access to ATMs in our stores. It's another customer-focused service we're happy to provide."

Besides the Walgreens ATMs, the Citibank-Cardtronics branding relationship, which began in 2007, will expand to cover an additional 900 retail ATMs placed in other pharmacy, mass merchandiser, and wholesale club store locations in Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., the release said.

Citibank cardholders will have surcharge-free access to these and other ATMs through the Cardtronics-owned Allpoint Network, which includes more than 30,000 ATMs across the United States.

"We are pleased to team up with Cardtronics to significantly expand fee-free ATM access for our customers at premier retailers nationwide," said Will Howle, head of U.S. retail banking at Citi. "By nearly doubling our network of surcharge-free ATMs, we're making it even easier for Citibank customers to meet their banking needs on the go."
