Cardtronics continues ATM buying spree

February 26, 2003

HOUSTON -- Cardtronicshas continued its buying spree by acquiring the ATMs and related processing contracts covering 938 Winn-Dixie stores in the southeastern U.S. from XtraCash ATM, Inc.

The acquisition pushes Cardtronics' ATM network past the 10,000 mark, making it the third largest independent deployer of ATMs, following eFunds and E*Trade Access. Earlier this month, E*Trade announced it had purchased some 4,000 ATM contracts from XtraCash.

The Winn-Dixie machines were part of a banking program for the supermarket's customers called Marketplace Bank. The program was run by XtraCash parent Amicus Financial, the U.S. electronic banking arm of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), which in November announced its exit from the U.S. market. Those customer accounts were transferred to  E*Trade Bank.

According to a news release, the Winn-Dixie locations included in the acquisition are in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

The Winn-Dixie acquisition comes hot on the heels of Cardtronics' purchase of 22 ATM locations in shopping malls from CenterCourt Cash. In late November, Cardtronics also purchased 1,200 ATMs in retail locations from manufacturer Diebold.

"We are very pleased to add Winn-Dixie Stores to our growing list of corporate accounts that includes some of the biggest names in the retail and petroleum industries," said Jack Antonini, chief executive of Cardtronics, in the release. "This acquisition not only significantly expands the size of our ATM network, but also strengthens our presence in the southeast, especially in Florida."
