Canadian city considering license fees for ATMs

January 8, 2004

EDMONTON, Alberta - The city should consider establishing annual license fees for ATMs and video lottery terminals as a way to raise more money, said Council Member Dave Thiele.

According to a report in the Edmonton Journal, fees could not be applied to ATMs located on bank property, since banks are exempt from municipal licensing. But machines located elsewhere would be fair game.

The only Canadian city to currently levy license fees on ATMs is Victoria, British Columbia, according to a city managers' report. It charges $700 per ATM each year.
