Mayhem reigned as cash rained down on commuters during Thursday morning rush hour in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
A local ABC news affiliate reported that a Brinks armored van in transit experienced a malfunction that caused one of its doors to open, releasing a billowing cloud of banknotes onto the roadway.
According to the report, drivers abruptly stopped their cars in the middle of the road and got out to chase down the cash. Several crashes resulted from the sudden stoppage.
Authorities in East Rutherford have warned the public that individuals who keep money they picked up could be held liable for theft of mislaid property.
They are asking anyone with video of the incident to provide it to the police so that they can identify people who took the money and document the many crashes.
