Barclaycard Global Payment Acceptance and Diners Club Intl., a business unit of Discover Financial Services, have signed a joint agreement to allow the acceptance of Discover and Diners Club cards through Barclaycard payment acquiring services. Thousands of merchants now will be able to accept payments from Discover, Diners Club International, and Discover Network partners cardholders from around the world.
According to a news release from the companies, Barclaycard will add acceptance of Discover Network and Diners Club International to its payments processing services portfolio starting in early 2015. Currently the Discover brands are accepted in 185 countries. Barclaycard is one of Europe's largest payment acceptance providers with more than 89,000 merchants.
"[T]his new agreement between Barclaycard and Diners Club International will allow our merchants to take payment from a wider range of overseas customers," said Paulette Rowe, managing director of Barclaycard Global Payment Acceptance. "Whether you run a small online shop or a global retail chain, accepting the widest possible range of payments will mean more choice for customers and more opportunities for businesses."
Gerry Wagner, VP of global acceptance for Discover Financial Services, said the agreement with Barclaycard will increase the company's presence in a key tourist destination — the U.K.
"Not only will our cardmembers benefit from this increased acceptance, but Barclaycard Global Payment Acceptance merchants will find it easier to accept Discover Network and Diners Club International cards as method of payment, both in person and online," he said.
