Bank system crash causes nationwide EFT outage

February 10, 2012

NAB customers across Australia were without ATM, Internet, telephone and EFTPOS banking services earlier today following a computer crash, and temporarily lost access to funds in their accounts, according to a news report in The Australian.

The bank confirmed the crash and issued a statement saying that the outage had affected all of its online services. “We can confirm that NAB is currently experiencing technology system problems and as a result customers are unable to successfully transact using a range of NAB banking channels including ATMs, EFTPOS, HiCAPS, Internet banking and telephone banking," the statement said.

In a later statement, NAB said services were returning to full functionality.

The NAB outage continues a sequence of major computer breakdowns at Australia's major banks, a pattern that analysts say will continue for years as banks seek to replace generations-old core systems.
