The Secret Service worked with the Pittsburgh and Allegheny County police to remove nine skimming devices from ATMs, gas pumps and stores. They analyzed 272 locations, including 883 POS terminals, 775 gas pumps and 170 ATM card readers, according to a report by WTAE.
The Secret Service stated that by removing these devices, it "prevented an estimated $9.4 million in consumer losses."
The Secret Service recommends that customers inspect ATMs, POS terminals and card readers for signs of tampering and to use tap-to-pay technology. Customers can also run a debit card as a credit card at a gas pump so they don't have to enter their PIN.
