On Sept. 21, the Polish Central Bureau of Investigation in Gdansk dismantled an illegal print shop producing counterfeit 50 euro bank notes. According to a Europol press release, the printer sold the counterfeit notes on the darknet to buyers across the European Union and beyond.
Europol alerted authorities in Poland to the criminal activity. Poland completed an investigation in cooperation with Austrian law enforcement, coordinated by Europol, and were able to identify and locate the suspect.
When he was arrested, the suspect was on his way to send dozens of envelopes filled with counterfeit notes to customers all over Europe, the release said. In an ensuing house search, authorities seized additional counterfeit bank notes.
The suspect was an active vendor on darknet platforms for many years, and is believed to have produced more than 100,000 counterfeit 50 euro notes. If convicted, he faces a sentence of 5 to 25 years in prison, the release said.
