Authorities bust up two-year skimming operation at Vegas ATMs

April 5, 2012

Thieves used skimmers and pinhole cameras at ATMs in Las Vegas to lift credit card data over a two year period, said an article at lasvegassun.com. Thirteen California residents have been arrested and are now charged with the crime in a federal indictment.

The indictment said the thefts went on from November 2009 to November 2011. The skimmer and camera provided the thieves with all the data they needed to create and use fake credit cards. The indictment did not provide a dollar amount for losses incurred in the skimming operation.

Daniel Bogden, U.S. attorney for Nevada, used the indictment as a warning to all would-be identity thieves. “We are working vigilantly with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners to identify, arrest and prosecute criminals who are stealing personal information and using it to manufacture counterfeit credit and debit cards,” he said. “If you are involved in this type of criminal activity and are convicted, you are going to federal prison.”
