'Attention Kmart Shoppers: Please visit the nearest ATM.'

November 27, 2012

It wasn't exactly the type of "Christmas rush" holiday shoppers had in mind. Customers waiting outside a Westchester County, N.Y., Kmart learned just minutes before the store's 5:00 a.m. opening that all purchases had to be made with cash, sending many on a mad dash to the nearest ATM.

Store managers blamed a corporate-wide computer outage for rendering Kmart's POS system temporarily unable to accept credit or debit payments. By 5:30, one check-out line in the store was able to accept e-payments from Black Friday bargain-hunters.

Daniel Aparicio,19, was among the Kmart customers who found themselves on a sudden quest for cash. "I wish they did a better job updating their system," he told Iohud. "This is awful."
