ATMs go high-tech to fight crime

January 27, 2012

In response to increasingly sophisticated attacks by thieves, ATM makers are turning to high technology, said a story from the Wall Street Journal.

Currently Diebold Inc. is working on a machine (which the company debuted at VMWorld in September 2011) that uses cloud computing to store information remotely, reducing the risk of a costly data breach. Data in Diebold's "virtual" model would reside at central repositories that the machines could access remotely.

NCR Corp. has introduced an ATM in Brazil that identifies customers by reading vein patterns in their hands. NCR also is developing an ATM that would not require the swipe of a card. After installing a mobile app on their smartphone, customers could simply tap the phone against the ATM to make a transaction.

Brazil-based Itautec SA is finalizing a prototype ATM that uses holograph images to allow customers to make transactions using hand gestures. The machine can then be placed behind bulletproof glass with only the cash dispenser door exposed.

The report said it was not clear whether banks would be willing to upgrade to the new technology at a time when their profits are under pressure.
