ATMIA honors ATM inventor

September 20, 2006

LONDON - The ATM Industry Association has given an honorary Lifetime Achievement Award to John Shepherd-Barron, the inventor of the ATM. The award will be presented at ATMIA's 10th anniversary Conference East 2007 in Orlando, Fla.

It is the first time the ATM industry will officially recognize the role of Shepherd-Barron as the inventor of the ATM, according to a news release. Shepherd-Barron also will give the keynote address at the association's 10th anniversary conference.

"Every single one of us in the ATM industry owes this gentleman big time, from the ATM engineer, to the cash carrier, to the custodian, to the ATM owner, to the millions of customers accessing cash outside of bank hours at convenient locations every day," said Mike Lee, chief executive officer of ATMIA.

ATMIA's 10th anniversary celebration also coincides with the 40th birthday of the ATM.
