ANZ, CR2 partner to intro UnionPay acceptance at ATM, POS

Phase one of the project went live last month, making ANZ the first bank in the Southern Hemisphere to accept contactless and EMV-enabled UnionPay cards.

CR2, an Irish provider of multichannel banking platforms, has announced the completion of a project with Melbourne, Australia-based ANZ Banking Group Ltd. to enable the acceptance of UnionPay cards at ANZ ATM and POS networks.

According to a CR2 press release, the first phase of the project went live last month, making ANZ the first bank in the Southern Hemisphere to accept contactless and EMV-enabled UnionPay cards.

In the second phase of the project to be completed later this year, ANZ will begin accepting UPI cards across the entire Oceania and APAC region, the release said.

ANZ is using the CR2 card management acquiring solution to acquire, recognize, and treat transactions for cards issued by UPI. This allows UnionPay customers to make payments at any accepting merchant or withdraw cash from any ANZ ATM across Asia with their UPI card.

CR2 continues to provide ANZ with a switching and processing solution for transactions performed the throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

"As such, giving them the convenience to use UPI cards at ANZ ATMs and accepting merchant terminals fits in with our super-regional strategy and customer focus."
