Amex doubles size of network with purchase of EDS ATMs

February 27, 2002

NEW YORK -- American Express has purchased more than 4,500 ATMs from EDS. The machines are located in 7-Eleven stores in 27 states and the District of Columbia. EDS will continue to provide transaction processing, ATM driving and information management services for the machines. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

American Express began building its ATM network in 1998 as a way to deliver increased convenience to its cardholders and to develop a new distribution network for products and services from American Express and from its merchant partners. With the EDS portfolio, American Express now owns 8,762 ATM machines, making it the nation's second largest ATM owner.

American Express plans to begin branding its entire ATM network this year with the name ATM AxisÆ. The name reflects the company's plans for the ATMs to offer products and services beyond dispensing cash, such as financial services, ticketing and retail couponing. Each machine will contain the ATM AxisÆ logo and the American Express "Blue Box" logo by the end of the year.
