Algérie Poste, the largest provider of financial services in Algeria, has contracted with Wincor Nixdorf for the delivery of 600 ATMs, as well as maintenance for a period of 10 years, according to a press release.
Currently, Algeria has some 2,000 ATMs — most of them operated by the post office. With the installation of the new systems, the state-run postal company will expand its market share to include approximately 80 percent of all ATMs in the country.
Installation of the new 600 ProCash 285 ATM systems will be carried out over the next 18 months, the release said. About one-quarter of the new devices will be used to replace outdated systems; the rest are new additions.
The new terminals will be located mainly in post office branches, but Algérie Poste ATMs can also be found at shopping centers, university campuses and large school facilities.
"We want to increase the proximity to our 18 million customers," said Rachid Benazouz, head of electronic payments and postal finance services in Algeria. "This broader ATM presence is part of the supply mandate we have to fulfill as a state-run company."
Benazouz also said that, as the market leader, Algérie Poste is expected to exert technology leadership in our country
"Digitalization is currently the No. 1 objective at Algérie Poste. That's why the ATMs will not only offer basic functions such as cash withdrawals and balance inquiries but also options for direct marketing and cell phone top-ups."
Only a few months ago, Algérie Poste awarded Wincor Nixdorf an order to equip its service counters with peripherals.
