NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), one of four state-owned commercial banks in China, purchased more than 110 advanced-feature ATMs from Diebold, Incorporated (NYSE:DBD). The ATMs will be installed in the Sichuan and Guangxi provinces, which have populations of almost 90 million and 20 million people respectively.
"ATM providers have targeted this area as an important market," said James L.M. Chen, Diebold vice president and managing director, Asia-Pacific. "The region referred to as the China-west region accounts for two-thirds of the nation's territories, encompassing the cities of Nanning and Chengdu. The Chinese government has just announced an ambitious initiative to accelerate the development of this region."
Delivery and installation of the ATMs, which have 15-inch color screens, thermal printers and cassettes capable of dispensing currency as well as non-cash items such as coupons, tickets and pre-paid phone vouchers, began in summer of 2000.
