Triton pays its respects to Barnaby Jack

We are profoundly saddened by the passing of Barnaby Jack at the age of 35.

Barnaby demonstrated an attack on our ATM at the Black Hat conference in 2010; Triton experienced first-hand Barnaby’s ethics and integrity:

  • He reached out to us to inform us of his attack before publishing.
  • He met with us and explained the technical details of his work.
  • He accepted our request to delay his presentation until we had installed our patch on more ATMs.
  • He did not disclose how-to details of his attack, he just demonstrated the results.

Barnaby’s technical skills were excellent, and he pushed Triton to improve the security of our ATMs.

The techniques we implemented in response to Barnaby’s work, such as the real-time verification of the digital signature of all software before it is installed or executed, we now proudly promote as product features.

Barnaby and I started as adversaries and ended as friends. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.
