Who's Who: Stan Paur

Busy. That's the best way to describe Stan Paur, president and CEO of the PULSE EFT Network, which is on track for a second straight record-setting year.

September 27, 2001

Jetting here and there for business meetings. Working with a board of directors comprised of representatives from two dozen financial institutions across the U.S. LeadingPULSE, a not-for-profit EFT network in a competitive market against big profit machines. All these activities can be found on Stan Paur's busy itinerary. And that's on a light day.

OK, maybe all these things don't happen every day, but it probably feels that way at times to Paur, president and chief executive officer of the ever-growing PULSE, which boasts a network of more than 2,600 financial institutions, handles more than 60 million transactions per month, recently merged with Wisconsin's TYME Corp., and saw its biggest year of growth in 2000 - with 2001 on pace for another record-breaking year. Yes, this kind of success will keep a person busy. (Try to get an interview with Paur, and you'll understand just how busy he is.) "I'm in the office by 7 o'clock," he said, describing a typical day. "If I'm not on the road traveling, I work 'til about 6. Besides that, I'm on the road or in airplanes at least two days a week. The demands have gotten greater simply as a function of our mergers and acquisitions. "Travel at any level is a hassle," he continued. "That's the only part of my job I don't like. I was coming back from Wisconsin about a month ago and they lost my luggage. God knows where it went. But the main thing you've got to do is take a deep breath and relax." Relax? Paur acknowledges that PULSE is on pace to at least match the 26 percent increase last year in its transaction numbers - that would make 2001 the 20th consecutive year of growth. PULSE has added 339 new members - and that doesn't include those gained through the merger with TYME or an earlier merger with Money Station in February.

That's not to mention that he and the PULSE Board of Directors are in the throes of creating a long-range strategic plan.

Stan Paur:President and CEO: Pulse EFT Birthdate: Jan. 17, 1944 Birthplace: St. Louis Residence: HoustonEducation: St. Louis University, bachelor of arts, English, 1967Resume: Joined PULSE in 1972, previously a sales manager at Diebold Inc.Family:Married 34 years, three grown children, one grandchild Key quote: "Never give up."

Cindy Ballard, PULSE's secretary to the board of directors and Paur's co-worker for the past 19 years, can attest to the fact that he is one of the busiest guys in the network.

"He is a very busy man -- has been as long as I've known him," Ballard said. "He is very much hands-on and always wants to meet with individuals and customers and other participants. Lately, it's gotten more and more hectic and busy, so the demands on him have become greater and greater." What all this means is that Paur rarely gets a chance to take a deep breath, much less relax. But he's OK with that. "I believe in having fun," he said. "If you're not having any fun, it's not worth it. You don't devote yourself to this unless you enjoy it." Even with his frequent travels and hectic business schedule, Paur finds time for a little fun. A golfaholic, Paur has shared the links with the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Hale Irwin and Sergio Garcia. "I've had some incredible golfing experiences," he said. "Nothing will compare with playing 18 holes with Jack Nicklaus in Hawaii. We not only played, but he gave me lessons for about 16 holes. If you're an avid golfer this is something you DREAM about." Even though his passion for the sport is evident - "Golf is something that takes me away from all the pressures and demands," he said -- Paur stresses that his main passions are his wife first, followed by his job, with golf coming in third place. Nevertheless, there's no mistaking the determination in his voice when he discusses his long-range plans. "My goal is to play the top 100 golf courses in world," he said. "I'm up to 62."
